DescriptionEthanolamine, also known as aminoethanol or glycinol, belongs to the class of organic compounds known as 1,2-aminoalcohols. These are organic compounds containing an alkyl chain with an amine group bound to the C1 atom and an alcohol group bound to the C2 atom. Ethanolamine exists as a liquid, possibly soluble (in water), and a very strong basic compound (based on its pKa) molecule. Ethanolamine exists in all living species, ranging from bacteria to humans. Ethanolamine is a potentially toxic compound. Ethanolamine has been found to be associated with several diseases known as perillyl alcohol administration for cancer treatment, irritable bowel syndrome, and ulcerative colitis; also ethanolamine has been linked to several inborn metabolic disorders including propionic acidemia and maple syrup urine disease.
